What would I do as an intern?
This is very dependant on your placements existing projects and vision. Existing interns are currently involved with youth congregations, schoolswork (assemblies and extra-curricular projects), a football academy, creative arts projects, and mentoring young people. You will work a five-day week, and have one session in three off (three sessions in a day: morning, afternoon and evening) Check out our current interns testemonials to give you more of an idea of what they do.
Training
Each intern will go on CPAS’s course “Growing Leaders”. This looks specifically at leadership development, and trains in a style which makes the learning very applicable to practical youth work.
If your placement is entirely focussed on the secondary school age, there is also opportunity to train on CYM’s Engage course, to qualify as a youth support worker at VRQ Level 3 (NOCN accredited and endorsed by the National Youth Agency). This is a particularly valuable qualification if you are considering going into full time youth work.
Supervision
Carolyn Dykes, internship co-ordinator, will oversee the internship programme and training. The spiritual welfare of interns is the highest priority – it’s important that the year of ministry as an intern doesn’t become your relationship with God. So to make sure all is going well at work and in your personal life, you will be assigned a line manager, most likely the minister of your placement church, who will oversee your workload. You will also have a mentor, who you will have regular contact with, to stay on top of any other things going on in your life. Your mentor won’t necessarily need to be from your placement church, but there is no option not to have a mentor. These three people will work together to make sure you have the best experience on the internship scheme!
Accomodation and Living
You will live with a host family for your duration of your time as an intern. It’s between you and your host family to work out how you do meals, washing, and other basic living requirements, but they will provide a room for adequate living and storage space. The accomodation will be checked out by Aline before you move in, and the family will be fully briefed about what’s expected of them.
You will recieve pocket money monthly, and £15 monthly towards your mobile phone bill. Expenses for travel and youth work resources will also be covered.
Cost
You will be asked to raise £1000 towards the cost of being an intern for a year with Carlisle Diocese. This is includes all training and accomodation costs.
